Hardwired or plug in

Most built-in electric fireboxes are designed to be wired directly into a circuit, which is the right answer for a permanent installation and usually what an electrician will do. But hardwiring means an electrician, and in a rental, a retrofit or a room with an existing outlet in the right place, that is a cost and a permission you may not want. A plug kit gives you the second option: the same firebox, running from a standard outlet, installed without touching the wiring.

Fitment

Kits are made for specific fireboxes rather than sold universally, and the product page names the models each one fits. Check that list before ordering rather than assuming a kit will suit any Dimplex unit. If you are retrofitting an installed fireplace, the model number on the rating plate inside the firebox identifies it.

Practical notes

Plan where the outlet actually sits relative to the firebox opening, because the cord needs a route that stays hidden once the wall is finished. Check the fireplace's power draw against the circuit you intend to use, particularly on an older property where a room may be on one shared circuit and a heater running alongside a television is enough to trip it. A plug kit does not reduce the draw; it only changes how the unit connects.
