Solar Panels for Portable Power Stations

Twelve solar panels from EcoFlow and Bluetti, $19 to $999. These are the panels that recharge a portable power station without mains power, not roof mounted array panels.

What they are actually for

A portable power station is a battery, and a battery is only useful for as long as it holds charge. On a weekend that is fine from a wall socket. Off grid, on a long trip, or in an outage that runs past a day, the only thing that extends it is generation, and a solar panel is the quiet, fuelless way to do that. Pairing is the thing to get right: the panel needs to match the station's input, and the manufacturers publish which panels work with which units.

Sizing realistically

Panel output is rated under ideal conditions, and real recharge is slower than the number on the box. Cloud, angle, temperature and time of year all reduce it, so a panel that looks like it will refill a station in a day may take considerably longer in practice. Buying slightly more panel than the arithmetic suggests is the usual advice from people who rely on it. Folding and portable formats exist for transport as well as fixed panels for a semi permanent setup.

Buying with the station

Order the panel with the power station where you can, because the connector and the input limit are both station specific, and a panel that physically connects can still be throttled by the station it feeds. Buying both from the same brand removes that question entirely. Everything carries its manufacturer factory warranty, valid because we are an authorized dealer.
