Hearth Pads

Floor protection for stoves and inserts, sized and rated to the appliance's clearance requirements. A pad is not decorative: the required R-value and footprint come from the stove's manual, and the listing must meet or exceed both.

Hearth Pads for Pellet and Wood Stoves

Eight ComfortBilt hearth pads, $629 to $749, in corner and flat wall formats and a range of finishes. A hearth pad is the fire rated base a freestanding stove has to sit on.

Why a stove needs one

A freestanding pellet or wood stove radiates heat downward as well as outward, and most floors are not rated to take it. A hearth pad is the fire rated barrier between the two, and in most jurisdictions it is a code requirement rather than an optional accessory. Skipping it is not a shortcut you can take and still pass an inspection or keep an insurance policy intact. It also protects the floor from ash and embers during loading and cleaning, which is the more everyday reason people are glad they bought one.

Corner or flat wall

The two formats exist because stoves get installed two ways. A flat wall pad is rectangular and sits with the stove against a straight wall. A corner pad is cut to sit diagonally across a room corner, which is where a stove often ends up because it is out of the traffic path. Choose the format from where the stove is actually going, then check the pad dimensions against the stove footprint plus the clearance your stove manufacturer specifies behind and to the sides.

Finishes and ordering

Several finishes are offered so the pad can be matched to the floor rather than fighting it. Measure the stove and read its required clearances before ordering, since a pad that is too small is not usable. Free shipping to the lower 48 on orders over $99.
