Power and heating coverage
Most units run on standard 120V household power at about 1,500W, which heats roughly 400-1,000 sq ft as supplemental warmth. Larger linear models such as the Dimplex IgniteXL series can be hard-wired at 240V for around 2,500W and greater coverage. Anything above roughly 1,500W generally needs a dedicated circuit.
Recessed, wall-mounted or built-in
Linear fireboxes are designed to be fully recessed into a framed wall for a flush architectural look, and most can alternatively be surface-mounted. Recess depth is usually modest - the IgniteXL 60 needs under six inches - which is what makes them workable in walls that could never take a gas firebox.
Flame quality is the real differentiator
