- How do you light gas logs?
- Depends on the ignition. Match-lit sets are lit with a long lighter at the burner while the gas key is opened. Sets with a standing pilot light once at the start of the season and then run from the wall switch or remote. Electronic-ignition sets light from the remote or switch directly. If the set has a pilot, hold the control knob on pilot while lighting, keep it held for half a minute, then release and turn to on.
- What are gas logs?
- Ceramic or refractory cement logs arranged over a gas burner inside an existing fireplace, giving a wood look without wood. Vented sets burn with a tall realistic flame and require the damper open. Vent-free sets burn cleaner and send all heat into the room, with size and placement limits set by code. - Will gas logs work without electricity?
- Match-lit and standing-pilot sets do, which is why gas logs are a dependable outage heat source. Electronic-ignition sets need power for the spark, though many include battery backup for exactly this case. If outage performance matters to you, choose a millivolt standing-pilot system or confirm the battery backup before ordering.
- Do gas logs need to be vented?
- Vented sets do: they burn like a real fire and must exhaust up an open flue, which also means most of their heat leaves with the exhaust. Vent-free sets are certified to burn without a flue and keep the heat, but they carry room size and placement rules and are not permitted everywhere. Which type your fireplace and local code allow is the first thing to settle.
