Monessen has built hearth products in the United States for decades and the range is deliberately modular, so a firebox can be specified and finished separately.

Vented and vent free

The two families solve different problems. Vented models exhaust outside and give you the taller, more irregular flame that reads closest to wood, at the cost of sending some heat up the flue. Vent free models burn clean enough to run without a chimney, which puts nearly all the heat into the room and makes them viable in spaces where running a vent is impossible. Vent free is restricted in some jurisdictions and is not recommended for bedrooms in several, so confirm local code before ordering. Every model publishes its BTU rating.

Fireboxes, log sets and burners

Because the system is modular, the firebox, the burner and the log set are specified separately, and that is what allows the same opening to be finished several ways. Log sets are hand painted refractory cast from real wood, and the ember bed and glowing embers are part of the effect rather than an afterthought. Burner choice determines flame shape and BTU, so it is worth reading both the firebox and burner pages before ordering. Doors, fronts and glass are listed here as well.

Controls and ordering

Many models offer remote control, and some add a wall thermostat so the fireplace can hold a set temperature rather than run flat out. Fuel type is not a setting: a natural gas unit and a propane unit are different SKUs, so check the fuel on the product page before you order.
